Chapter 1

Meeting Your Mate

Long before you can start the immigration process and get to the main subject of this book, you must first find and meet the person with whom you plan on spending your life. In most cases it does not start out with a conscious thought of, for example "I'm going to find a woman from Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia and marry her." How one comes to this point and decides to look abroad for a mate is as varied as are the methods. Yes, the methods vary and going long physical or cultural distances for a mate has had a long and predictable career. There were those mountain men of the 18th and 19th century American Westward movement that found and married indigenous women of the American frontier. The most notable was Jeremiah Johnson and his Flat Head Indian wife. The French foreign legion was notorious for having its young men marry women from the exotic Middle East and Northern African provinces. What about the man that gave it all up for one exotic woman? The famous red-haired Fletcher Christian and his beautiful, brown skinned Tahitian wife. And let us not forget about the most famous conqueror of antiquity, Julius Caesar and his foreign bride the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Even holy books like the Torah, Quran, Bible, Pali Canon and Gita talk about miscegenation of the people.

Modern times has made it far easier for men like these to pursue the adventure but it has also increased the risk to all who partake in the endeavor. The advent of computers has not only brought the world closer for those making world trades in banking and commerce but it has had a great impact on love. Opening doors to those not privileged enough to travel with a large international army or wealthy enough to sail the seven seas, it has allowed men and women the opportunity to meet, and fall in love over great expanses of time and space.

Your USA Government

Before we start down this road I would be remiss if I did not share what I feel is negative information about the process on which you are about to embark. This is information with respect to our government and its indirect view of this process. While the Immigration Service is quick to say they do not necessarily agree with the conclusions of Doctor Scholes (the author and researcher on a government sponsored study of American men marrying Foreign women,) they did fund the project so as to obtain a better idea as to the possible impact. By the very definition and the commissioning of the study, the former INS (now USCIS) implies that there is some sort of impact on the men and women and a more overt implication is that this impact is negative. Here is the opening paragraph of the study:

"An American man seeking a foreign bride may avail himself of over 200 different services in which foreign women advertise for husbands. There are two types of such services. In one type, the so-called 'mail-order bride' industry (representatives of the industry prefer the term 'international correspondence service'), women's names, photos, biographical sketches, and addresses are presented in hard copy brochures or on the Internet. In these services, the agency provides the photos and descriptions of the women, who are not charged for this listing. Men who wish to obtain the mailing address of any of the women they would like to contact are charged a fee of from $2 to $5 for each of the mailing addresses. The other way to contact potential spouses is through e-mail 'pen-pal' clubs. These services are generally free of charge."

THE "MAIL-ORDER BRIDE" INDUSTRY AND ITS IMPACT ON U.S. IMMIGRATION by Robert J. Scholes, Ph.D. with the assistance of Anchalee Phataralaoha, MA, is a well-known book on the subject. This research was funded under purchase order COW-8-P-0233 from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (presently known as USCIS). The analyses and conclusions presented do not necessarily represent the official position or policy of the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service.

I am not going to argue with the doctor, even though most of his data is either grossly inaccurate or simply stated (many agencies charge over $25,000 for their services with the average being about $1,000) that is not the purpose of this book. It is designed to help, not argue with those opinions. I print this only to present a view held by a large segment of our society. Some of those members of society are in positions of power and you will meet or at least have to deal with these types of individuals. Simply be prepared to feel this disdain by others for the task you undertake. Meanness presented mainly by women but perpetuated and fortified by men. Like so many others in the minority world, you too are about to become a minority, admired by some and despised by many.

Methods of Meeting Your Mate

In this section I will discuss the major methods available to just such people and the most prolific methods currently available. I will specialize on the area of the former Soviet Union countries; however, most areas of the world are the same with an ever increasing availability of people willing to meet a foreign partner and move to far off lands. This is a diverse and wide area to discuss.

Before we start I would like to say one thing about testimonials and "clients." As we all know "figures don't lie, but liars can figure." Virtually all the sites on the net have various claims and client success stories. Few list the failures. Look at the section "What an Agency Should Do" to see the importance of this area.

Finally, I must also state that in this book many assumptions are made. When one is made it is so stated (either directly or indirectly) and why. This book assumes that the person is looking for that mate for life. It does not address dating, experiencing different customs for the sole purpose of the experience, or any universally accepted illegal or immoral activities. It is designed for those looking for that man or woman from a far off land that they want to bring to the USA, marry and live with here happily ever after.

There are as many different methods of finding that perfect mate, as there are women available in the FSU for you. I will basically discuss the four main areas widely used, and my likes and dislikes in each area.
